Israel blocks movement into northern Gaza and delays withdrawal from southern Lebanon
Thousands of displaced Palestinians in the north of the Gaza Strip remain unable to return to their homes, while the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, scheduled for today, has been partly postponed. Two different contexts, but linked by growing regional tensions and accusations of ceasefire agreement violations.
Blockade in Gaza after prisoner exchange
In Gaza, Israel closed a main road, accusing Hamas of violating the terms of a recent ceasefire. The situation became more complicated after the prisoner exchange: Hamas released four Israeli soldiers, while Israel released 200 Palestinian prisoners. However, Israel has imposed new conditions, declaring that it will not allow Palestinians to return to the north of the Strip until concrete plans are made for the release of Israeli civilian Arbel Yehud, whom Hamas has assured will be freed next week.
The agreement was that Hamas would release the civilians before the military, but the Israeli authorities believe this sequence has been disregarded. Last night, tense moments occurred along al-Rashid street in central Gaza, with Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) firing shots to disperse a crowd of displaced people. ‘The shooting was aimed at distancing people and not injuring them,’ the IDF said, adding that there were no injuries among those present.
Incomplete withdrawal from southern Lebanon
On the Lebanese front, Israel was supposed to complete the withdrawal of its troops from southern Lebanon today, according to an agreement brokered 60 days ago by the US and France to end 14 months of conflict with Hezbollah. However, Israel decided to keep some units in the territory, claiming that Hezbollah did not fully comply with the terms of the agreement.
The agreement included, in addition to the Israeli withdrawal, the removal of Hezbollah fighters and weapons from the area, to be replaced by thousands of Lebanese army soldiers in charge of security. Israel justified the delay by saying that this condition was not met, leaving southern Lebanon in a stalemate.
A region in the balance
The combination of tensions in Gaza and southern Lebanon underlines the fragility of the balance in the region, where ceasefire agreements, often brokered by outside powers, struggle to translate into concrete stability. Local populations, already tried by years of conflict, continue to pay the highest price, trapped in a context of uncertainty and repression.
