Russian authorities announce the arrest of two suspects, including an Uzbek citizen, for the murder of General Igor Kirillov and his assistant Ilya Polikarpov in Moscow
Two people suspected of participating in the murder of Russian General Igor Kirillov and his assistant Ilya Polikarpov have been arrested. The news was reported by the daily Kommersant via its Telegram channel, citing an anonymous source. According to initial reconstructions, the suspects were identified thanks to surveillance camera footage that captured two suspicious cars near the crime scene.
The arrest of an Uzbek citizen and the involvement of Ukrainian services
The Russian Investigative Committee confirmed the arrest of a 29-year-old Uzbek citizen accused of participating in the bomb attack that killed General Kirillov, commander of the Russian Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defence Forces, and his assistant Polikarpov.
The suspect reportedly stated during interrogation that he had been recruited by the Ukrainian special services with the promise of a $100,000 payment and a ‘trip to live in one of the European Union countries’. According to the Russian authorities’ version of events, the suspect acted under the direction of the Ukrainian services, following instructions received to carry out the attack in Moscow.
Details of the operation: use of car-sharing cars and cameras
Investigators allege that the suspect would have used a video surveillance camera installed on a car taken on car-sharing to monitor General Kirillov’s place of residence. The camera allegedly transmitted live images to the alleged organisers of the attack, located in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. After receiving the video signal confirming the general’s exit from the residence, the explosive device hidden on an electric scooter was allegedly detonated remotely.
The ongoing investigation
The Russian authorities are continuing their investigation into the murder, with the aim of determining the involvement of the Ukrainian secret services and clarifying further details of the operation. However, the version presented by Moscow cannot be independently verified at the moment.
