State of emergency declared for a week. Damage to buildings and communication difficulties. The search continues in the rubble
The provisional toll of the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck the Vanuatu archipelago in the last few hours is at least 14 dead and over 200 injured, with damage to numerous buildings. Among the damaged structures are also the embassies of the United States, France, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, as reported by the BBC.
The earthquake was followed by other strong aftershocks and caused hiccups in mobile phone and Internet connections. The authorities have declared a state of emergency for a week to facilitate relief efforts and limit travel.
Rescue teams are working to search for any survivors trapped under the rubble, while two Chinese nationals are among the confirmed victims.
