Spokesperson Regnier: ‘Actors linked to Russian propaganda are trying to weaken the Union by exploiting political events and discussions’

‘Russia continues to interfere in European political debate’: this is the message sent by Thomas Regnier, one of the spokesmen for the European Commission, following the motion of censure against Ursula von der Leyen, which was rejected by the European Parliament in recent days.

According to Regnier, behind this initiative are operations directly linked to Moscow. ‘We have been monitoring Russian operations against the EU and the president for some time now. Independent fact-checkers have clearly identified such activities in the context of the motion of censure,’ he said, highlighting the growing role of disinformation in the strategy to destabilise the Union.

The spokesperson pointed out how actors linked to Kremlin propaganda cynically exploit every opportunity: ‘Attempts to polarise and weaken the EU continue, opportunistically exploiting events or political discussions to distort the debate, spread conspiracy theories or discredit European leaders.’

Regnier finally reiterated the importance of the work done by independent journalists and analysts to counter these phenomena, calling them ‘essential to understanding and addressing the problem.’
