A new Israeli law prohibits Unrwa from operating and having contact with the country’s authorities
Israel has demanded that Unrwa, the UN agency assisting Palestinian refugees, cease all its operations in Jerusalem and evacuate the premises by 30 January. The Israeli ambassador to the UN sent an official letter to the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, informing him of this decision.
The measure comes at the same time as the entry into force of a new Israeli law that prohibits Unrwa from operating on national territory and dealing with Israeli authorities.
This decision could have a significant impact on the essential services provided by UNRWA to Palestinian refugees, particularly in the East Jerusalem areas. The situation represents a further knot in the already strained relations between Israel and the UN regarding the Palestinian issue.
