Trump declares war on daylight saving time: elimination in sight?
The former president aims to abolish the semi-annual time change with the backing of Elon Musk
With his return to the White House, Donald Trump has declared that the Republican Party will pledge to eliminate daylight saving time in the United States. In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the semi-annual time change ‘inconvenient and costly for the country’. Daylight saving time, which will be restored between 8 and 9 March 2025, will revert to standard time on 2 November.
Elon Musk, Trump’s nominee to head the new Department for Cutting Government Spending, had already expressed his support for the abolition of daylight saving time, stating that most Americans want to do away with ‘annoying time changes’. However, Trump’s position contrasts with an earlier proposal by the Republican Party, which had attempted to make daylight saving time permanent in 2022.
The daylight saving time debate is not new and also involves Europe, where a similar decision was approved by the European Parliament in 2019, but its implementation has been repeatedly postponed.
