Strong winds and heavy rain hit the central and southern states. Tennessee among the hardest hit, with five fatalities. Emergency in Kentucky, 230,000 people without electricity

At least seven people have lost their lives due to the violent storms and tornadoes that are battering the central and southern United States. The hardest hit states range from Arkansas to Ohio, with destructive winds and torrential rains causing widespread damage and alarm among local authorities.

In Tennessee, the epicentre of the emergency, at least five deaths have been confirmed. Among the victims were a father and daughter who died in Fayette County after a tornado destroyed their prefabricated home. Three other people were injured and hospitalised. Another fatality was reported in Indiana, where a man was electrocuted after his car was struck by an electrical cable, while another death occurred in Missouri.

Schools were closed in several states, including Nashville, Tennessee’s capital, while Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear warned that worsening weather conditions could cause unprecedented damage. Images circulated on social media show devastated buildings, uprooted trees and overturned cars.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the phenomenon will continue until Saturday and could lead to disastrous flooding. Meanwhile, more than 230,000 people were left without electricity in several states. 2024 remains a record year for tornadoes in the US: some 1,800 have already been recorded, the highest number since 2004, with a death toll of 54.
