The investigation into violations of the law on illegal content and disinformation is proceeding independently of the tariff negotiations with the US. The fine could be announced in the summer

European authorities are considering a fine in excess of $1 billion against X, Elon Musk’s platform, for violating EU law on illegal content and disinformation. According to reports in the New York Times, the fine could be made official later this summer.

The investigation launched by the European Union into X is part of new regulations to counter the spread of fake news and material that does not comply with EU rules. European officials, quoted by the American newspaper, emphasise that the investigation continues independently of the trade negotiations between the Trump administration and the EU on the issue of duties.
