Taiwan’s military drills in 2027 will simulate the island’s defence against a possible Chinese attack, as Chinese military aircraft incursions into the region increase. Taipei’s Ministry of Defence confirms the importance of preparing for a possible invasion

2027 is the year when China might be ready to invade Taiwan, and now this date is officially in the island’s documents. During drills planned for July, Taiwan’s military will simulate the island’s defence against a Chinese attack expected ‘in 2027’, as confirmed by the Ministry of Defence in Taipei. The report, presented in Parliament, states that the scenarios will be based on incursions related to a possible ‘Chinese invasion of Taiwan in 2027’.

Taiwan, which considers itself de facto independent, defends its democracy, while Beijing sees the island as a ‘rebel province’ and aims at ‘reunification’, not excluding the use of force. The exercises aim to counter the ‘grey zone’ tactics employed by China, which involve hostile acts of interference without being considered open conflict.

The Taiwanese Ministry of Defence emphasises that commanders at all levels will plan realistic scenarios based on possible enemy actions. These military exercises are aimed at testing the operational readiness of troops and strengthening the island’s rapid reaction capability.

In anticipation of the ‘Han Kuang’ exercises in mid-July, Taiwan’s armed forces are already engaged in five-day manoeuvres to improve preparedness and response. These exercises coincide with the detection in the last 24 hours of 59 Chinese military aircraft around the island, the largest presence since last October.

Beijing’s Foreign Ministry called this action ‘a warning to separatist and independence forces’. The Taiwanese Defence Minister, Wellington Koo, pointed out that China could significantly reduce the time needed to move from exercises to combat.
