Putin conditionally opens to 30-day truce: possible phone call with Trump to discuss ceasefire
The Russian president welcomes the idea of a truce proposed by the US, but with many reservations. Phone call with Trump on the horizon to clarify peace details
Vladimir Putin has given a conditional yes to the US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Russian president, in response to a question about the truce, made it clear that the goal of the cessation of hostilities should be a lasting peace, capable of resolving the roots of the conflict.
‘We agree with the proposal, but it must lead to a stable peace,’ Putin said, adding that the situation on the ground, such as in the Russian-controlled Kursk region, is a crucial factor. Putin then hinted that there might be a phone call with US President Donald Trump in the coming hours to discuss the details of the truce.
Trump, for his part, greeted Putin’s statements with cautious optimism, calling them promising but incomplete. He also expressed his desire to see Russia take the right step towards a peaceful resolution, saying he was ready to discuss further details to secure the ceasefire.
