The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman has harshly criticised the Italian president, accusing him of misinformation and lies regarding statements on Russia’s nuclear threat status. This is the third attack in a few weeks

New attack by Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, on Italian President Sergio Mattarella. During a briefing, Zakharova called the statements by the Italian head of state, who had accused Russia of threatening Europe with nuclear weapons, ‘lies’. According to Zakharova, Mattarella’s statements are ‘falsehoods’ and a clear example of disinformation.

This is not the first time the Russian spokeswoman has criticised the Italian president. On 14 February she had already reacted to Mattarella’s statements, accusing him of drawing offensive parallels between Russia and Nazi Germany. Moreover, on 17 February it had warned that the Italian president’s words would not remain without consequences, calling them ‘blasphemous’.

The verbal conflict between Mattarella and Zakharova also dates back to the speech on 5 February, when the Italian president had compared Russian aggression against Ukraine to the Third Reich’s project of conquest. A position that triggered further criticism from the Russian spokeswoman, who had received a petition with ten thousand signatures of Italians opposed to Mattarella’s words.

Zakharova went on to defend Russia, describing Mattarella’s accusations as unfounded, and reiterated her position, denouncing Russia’s ‘unfair treatment’ on the international stage.
