Electricity cuts and the blockade of goods aggravate the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Israel tries to increase pressure for the release of hostages still being held

The Islamist movement Hamas accused Israel of not respecting the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, claiming that the Israeli occupation continues to circumvent the understanding and refuses to move to the second phase of the ceasefire. The accusation comes shortly before the arrival of an Israeli delegation in Doha for indirect negotiations on the continuation of the truce.

Meanwhile, the Israeli Energy Ministry’s decision to cut electricity to Gaza, on the orders of Minister Eli Cohen, has sparked further controversy. The Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Foreign Ministry called the move an escalation of the ‘genocide’ and humanitarian disaster in Gaza. The decision mainly affects the desalination plant in Deir el-Balah, exacerbating the water crisis in the enclave.

Israel also blocked the entry of goods into the Strip in response to Hamas’ refusal to accept the extension of the first phase of the agreement, with Hamas calling this measure “unacceptable blackmail”. The organisation, which still holds 59 hostages, has rejected Israeli pressure for their release.
