Collision between US tanker and Portuguese cargo ship in the North Sea: risk of environmental disaster
A serious maritime accident off East Yorkshire involves a US tanker and a Portuguese cargo ship. Help has been launched, but a fire on board could worsen the situation
An alert was raised in the North Sea off East Yorkshire shortly before 10am local time (11am in Italy) following a collision between a US-flagged tanker and a Portuguese cargo ship. According to the British Coast Guard, a fire broke out on board the tanker Mv Stena Immaculate, resulting in the immediate intervention of helicopters and rescue teams. The other vessel, the Dutch-bound merchant ship Solong, was also reportedly involved in the flames.
The accident, according to initial information provided by the BBC, could cause serious environmental consequences, with the risk of an oil spill at sea. Rescue operations are ongoing, but an ecological disaster is feared.
