Growing tension between the US and Ukraine: Trump threatens to suspend military aid while Zelensky reiterates that the end of the war is still far off
US President Donald Trump has harshly criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s position on the ceasefire with Russia. According to Trump, Zelensky made a very serious statement claiming that the end of the war is still ‘very very far away’. In a post published on his social network Truth, Trump accused Zelensky of not wanting peace, signalling that America will not tolerate this position for long.
The confrontation comes amidst an already tense context, with Trump having called an urgent summit to discuss the future of military aid to Ukraine. The president has expressed his fear that Europe cannot act without US support, as confirmed by the statements of European leaders at the recent meeting with Zelensky.
A decisive summit: the hypothesis of the suspension of military aid
In the afternoon, Trump will meet with key national security officials to assess the next US moves. Participants include Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. During the meeting, Trump will consider suspending military aid to Kiev, a decision that could have significant consequences for the course of the war in Ukraine.
Waltz, interviewed by Fox News, stated that the patience of the American people ‘is not unlimited,’ stressing that US resources and ammunition are not infinite. ‘Time is not on Zelensky’s side,’ he said, reiterating that the time has come for concrete talks.
Zelensky does not bend: ‘’It will not be easy to replace me‘’
On the other hand, Zelensky has responded to the American pressure with firmness. During his visit to London, warmly welcomed by European leaders and King Charles, the Ukrainian president reiterated that it will not be easy to force him to step down. Zelensky said he is only willing to consider resigning if Ukraine succeeds in joining NATO and the war with Russia ends. ‘If there is NATO and the end of the war, I will have completed my mission,’ Zelensky said, but he also stressed that his replacement will not be an easy process.
His words were greeted with concern by Trump, who reacted harshly. Zelensky’s statement that ‘the road to peace is still a long one’ triggered the anger of the US president, who interpreted these statements as a clear lack of will to find a quick solution to the conflict.
The road to peace: long and complex
Zelensky stressed that any peace agreement with Russia must be ‘honest’, ‘fair’ and ‘stable’, with specific security guarantees. Ukraine, according to Zelensky, is not considering any concessions at the moment, as it would be ‘wrong’ to do so. He also reiterated that he is ‘listening to signals’ from his international partners, suggesting that dialogue with other countries is continuing.
The situation remains extremely complex, with the US possibly reconsidering its role in military support for Ukraine, while Zelensky continues to emphasise the need for an agreement that guarantees long-term security and stability. The future of relations between Washington and Kiev seems uncertain, and Trump’s upcoming decisions could mark a decisive turning point in the Ukrainian conflict.
