Dozens of people swept away as they tried to board trains bound for Prayagraj. Five children were also among the victims
A deadly stampede occurred at the New Delhi railway station, where at least 18 people lost their lives trying to board trains to attend the rites of the Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious events, held every 12 years in Uttar Pradesh. The victims, including five children, ranged in age from 7 to 79. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the incident. The incident follows another tragedy in January, when at least 30 people died during the Maha Kumbh Mela rituals.
