US sanctions EU officials over digital policies, banning five European figures including former EU commissioner Thierry Breton. Washington cites censorship concerns

The United States has announced US sanctions EU officials, imposing entry bans on five European figures involved in digital regulation and efforts to combat online disinformation. Among those targeted is Thierry Breton, former European Commissioner for the Internal Market.

The measures were confirmed by the State Department, which said the actions of the sanctioned individuals amount to censorship that harms American interests. According to Washington, European digital policies have pressured US-based platforms to restrict content and opinions protected under US free speech standards.

Trump administration accuses Europe of censorship

Secretary of State Marco Rubio outlined the administration’s position in a post on X, accusing European actors of coordinating efforts to force American tech platforms to suppress viewpoints they oppose. Rubio said the Trump administration will no longer tolerate what it views as blatant extraterritorial censorship, signaling a tougher stance toward European digital governance.

Thierry Breton’s role in EU digital policy

Thierry Breton served as European Commissioner for the Internal Market from 2019 to 2024, overseeing key areas of digital and industrial policy. During his tenure, he played a central role in shaping EU rules targeting major technology companies, making him a prominent figure in ongoing tensions between Brussels and US-based tech firms. His inclusion in the US sanctions against EU officials underscores the political weight of the move.

NGO figures also targeted

The sanctions also apply to representatives of non-governmental organizations working to counter online disinformation and hate speech. Those named include Imran Ahmed, Clare Melford, Anna-Lena von Hodenberg, founder of the German NGO HateAid, and Josephine Ballon, who is also affiliated with the organization.

The US sanctions EU officials mark a new escalation in transatlantic tensions, with digital regulation and free speech standards emerging as a growing source of conflict between Washington and Brussels.
