Ukraine rejects Trump’s mineral resources proposal
President Zelensky rejects US request to acquire more than 50 per cent of Ukraine’s mineral resources, crucial for several strategic sectors
Ukraine has said no to Donald Trump’s proposal to gain access to Ukrainian rare earths in return for aid received over the past three years. Ukraine’s mineral resources, crucial for sectors such as electronics, defence, automotive and green energy, are considered to be of enormous economic value.
Work in progress on a new agreement with security guarantees
Kiev is working on a new protocol that would allow Washington preferential access to mineral resources, but only with security guarantees for Ukraine. President Zelensky emphasised that the proposal is not yet ready and that the agreement depends on security guarantees for the country.
The importance of rare earths and Trump’s position
Ukrainian rare earths could be worth trillions of dollars, but the US proposal has not been accepted due to the lack of security guarantees. The situation is also complicated by the control of the areas occupied by Russia, which aims to exploit the mineral resources. Senator Lindsey Graham highlighted the strategic value of these rare earths, suggesting that granting mineral resources to the US could change the economic approach towards Ukraine.
