An executive order by the president reintroduces the use of capital punishment for federal crimes

Donald Trump signed an executive order reinstating the federal death penalty, ending the moratorium introduced in 2021 by Joe Biden. The new directive instructs the attorney general to pursue capital punishment in cases involving the murder of federal agents or capital crimes committed by illegal aliens, without regard to other mitigating factors.

The president also asked the Justice Department to ensure an adequate supply of lethal injection drugs, taking ‘all necessary and legal actions’ to overcome any obstacles.

The decision has already provoked mixed reactions, with supporters praising the move as an act of justice and detractors fearing a reversal on human rights and criminal justice in the US.

There are currently only three defendants on federal death row, after Biden converted 37 death sentences to life imprisonment. Trump’s order marks a marked change of direction in federal policy, bringing back into force a practice that had been suspended for more than three years.
