Israel: Idf Chief of Staff General Halevi resigns
IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi announced his resignation, acknowledging his responsibility for the failure of the IDF on 7 October
General Herzi Halevi informed Defence Minister Israel Katz of his intention to resign on 6 March. In a public statement, Halevi admitted that he would leave the army after acknowledging his responsibility for the failure of the IDF on 7 October, and at a time when the IDF has achieved significant results and is implementing an agreement to release the hostages.
Preparations for the Handover of Command
Until 6 March, Halevi guaranteed that he will complete the investigation into the 7 October Hamas attack and prepare the Idf for future challenges. He stated that he will transfer the command of the Idf in an accurate and high-quality manner to his replacement.
Finkelman also Resigns
The head of the Idf Southern Command, Major General Yaron Finkelman, also announced his intention to resign, citing his responsibility in the 7 October massacre. In a letter sent to Halevi himself, and published by the Times of Israel, Finkelman explained that he made the decision following his conscience and the values that guide him. He added that he had failed in his duty to protect the Western Negev and its residents, and that this failure will remain branded within him for the rest of his life.
