The assailant took his own life after the attack. The judges were involved in national security and terrorism cases

Two judges of Iran’s Supreme Court, Ali Razini and Mohammad Moghiseh, were shot dead this morning in Tehran, while a third magistrate was wounded. The attack, which took place around 10.45 a.m. local time in front of the Supreme Court building, shook the country.

According to reports in the Tehran Times and the Fars news agency, the assailant, after opening fire, took his own life at the scene.

Judges in the crosshairs

The victims were prominent figures in the Iranian judiciary, known for their involvement in trials related to national security, espionage and terrorism. In particular, Ali Razini had already been the target of an assassination attempt in 1998, during which he was injured.

The shooting was also confirmed by Mizan Online, the official website of the Islamic Republic’s judiciary. Investigations are ongoing to determine the motives for the attack and the profile of the attacker, but initial speculations suggest a connection with the victims’ judicial activities.

A delicate context

Iran is going through a period of high internal and international tensions. This episode, which strikes at the heart of the judicial system, could further fuel concerns about the country’s stability and the security of institutional figures.

The Iranian authorities have not yet provided official details on the identity of the assailant or the motive, but observers believe the attack is linked to the delicate trials attended by judges, which often involve controversial and highly sensitive issues.
