The Canadian actor, famous for his role as Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander in Star Wars, passed away on 23 December. His career spanned more than 40 years in film and television

Angus MacInnes, a Canadian actor best known for playing former Imperial pilot Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander in the first Star Wars film (1977), died at the age of 77 on 23 December. ‘MacInnes passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family and love,’ the family announced via a post on the actor’s official Facebook account.

Born on 27 October 1947 in Windsor, Ontario (Canada), MacInnes had made his debut with a small role in the film ‘Rollerball’ in 1975. His best known role was offered by George Lucas for Star Wars, where he played Jon Vander, nicknamed ‘Dutch’, an imperial pilot who defected to join the rebellion. As Gold Leader, Vander leads a Y-wing squadron against the Empire. MacInnes also reprised this role in ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ (2016).

Special bond with Star Wars fans

MacInnes had a special affection for Star Wars fans. ‘For Angus, Star Wars fans held a special place in his heart,’ said the family. ‘He loved meeting them at conventions, listening to their stories and sharing his passion for the saga.’ The actor felt honoured by the enthusiasm and passion the fans showed towards him at the conventions.

Over 40 years in film and television

Angus MacInnes’ career has spanned more than four decades in film and television. He has appeared in series such as ‘Space: 1999’, ‘The Great Detective’, ‘Valley of the Moon’, ‘Space Island One’ and ‘Vikings’. His best-known films include ‘Force 10 from Navarone’ (1978), ‘Zero Atmosphere’ (1981), ‘Witness’ (1985), ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ (1999), ‘Hellboy’ (2004) and ‘Captain Phillips’ (2013).

A timeless film legacy

With a career studded with appearances in more than 50 films, Angus MacInnes will forever remain in the hearts of Star Wars fans and film buffs alike. His portrayal of Jon ‘Dutch’ Vander made him an iconic face of George Lucas’ saga, and his contribution to the film industry will live on through the many roles he has played over the years.
