José “Pepe” Mujica, the former president of Uruguay is in a terminal state: his wife announced it
Wife Lucía Topolansky confirms former head of state’s worsening condition: ‘He’s at his end, we’re just trying to accompany him as best we can’
José “Pepe” Mujica, former president of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015, is in a terminal state and under palliative care. This was confirmed by his wife Lucía Topolansky, as reported by the newspaper La Diaria, which quotes Radio Sarandí, explaining that doctors are doing everything possible to accompany him in this final stage in the most serene way. ‘He is at his end,“ she said, adding: ‘I have been with him for more than 40 years and I will be with him until the end, that has been my promise”.
The 89-year-old Mujica had made his illness public in January, announcing the spread of oesophageal cancer to other organs. Since then he had spoken openly about his condition, aware of the inescapable outcome. The family is trying to protect their privacy, but, as Topolansky admits, “with a character like Pepe it’s a bit impossible”.
