The White House supports Israel in continuing negotiations to free all hostages, while Hamas insists on Israel’s total disengagement from Gaza

White House National Security Council spokesman Brian Hughes expressed U.S. support for Israel’s decision to suspend humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The statement comes following the end of the first phase of agreements between Israel and Hamas, which included a hostage exchange. However, as Hamas pushes for complete Israeli disengagement from Gaza as envisioned in the second phase of the agreement, Israel has decided not to continue, focusing instead on freeing all hostages.

Hamas-Israel Standoff on Phase II.

Hamas has declared that it is no longer interested in continuing the cease-fire because Israel has not yet met its total disengagement from the Gaza Strip, one of the militant group’s key goals for the next phase of the agreement. Israel, however, has made the release of all hostages still in the hands of Hamas a condition for continuing negotiations. This divergence has generated a new phase of tension between the two sides.

White House Support and Prospects for Gaza.

Brian Hughes made it clear that the United States will support Israel in its “next steps,” reiterating that Tel Aviv negotiated in good faith to secure the release of the hostages from the beginning. The halting of humanitarian aid is thus seen as an inevitable consequence in the face of Hamas’ refusal to continue negotiations in the manner Israel desires.

The suspension of humanitarian aid, however, could further worsen the situation of Gaza’s civilian population, already hard hit by the conflict. The future of the talks remains uncertain as the United States continues to support Israel’s actions.
