Bombings, drones and international tensions between Russia, Ukraine and North Korea
Three people dead and one injured: this is the partial toll of the Russian drone attacks that hit several cities in the Kiev region overnight. According to regional police reports, 11 buildings were damaged, including eight private homes and a shop.
In Brovari, rescue teams recovered the bodies of a couple from the rubble of one of the destroyed buildings, according to mayor Igor Sapozhko. In Fastiv, however, a drone struck a ten-storey building, killing one person and forcing the evacuation of around 150 residents.
The Russian offensive with Shahed drones
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russia launched 58 ‘Shahed’ kamikaze drones in the last few hours. Of these, 25 were intercepted by air defence systems, while the others reportedly failed to reach their intended targets.
Meanwhile, Moscow also claimed to have been targeted by a Ukrainian drone attack. The Russian Defence Ministry reported the downing of 123 drones in several regions, including six over Moscow and one over Crimea. No details were given on any casualties or damage.
Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory
The Ukrainian military confirmed that it conducted night raids with drones on several strategic targets in Russia. An oil refinery and a power plant were hit in the Ryazan region, while a microelectronics plant was damaged in the Bryansk region. These attacks mark an escalation of the war, with Kiev trying to hit Russian infrastructure.
North Korea and support for Russia
The international tension is amplified with North Korea, which, according to a South Korean intelligence report quoted by the Yonhap news agency, is accelerating preparations for a new troop deployment in Russia. Pyongyang has reportedly already sent some 11,000 soldiers to fight alongside the Russian army in Ukraine.
The report indicates that North Korea is planning further troop deployments in spite of numerous casualties: about 300 dead and 2,700 wounded among the North Korean military. Moreover, the authorities in Seoul and Washington fear possible imminent provocations, such as the launch of a spy satellite or an intercontinental ballistic missile.
Conclusions and international implications
The war in Ukraine continues to evolve with new scenarios involving outside powers. North Korea’s direct intervention and increasing reciprocal drone raids represent a dangerous escalation of the conflict, which is intertwined with global geopolitical tensions.
