The lives of the four Israeli female soldiers that Hamas will free on Saturday 25 January

Hamas has announced the names of the four Israeli female soldiers to be released tomorrow, Saturday 25 January, as part of the ceasefire reached in Gaza. The young soldiers, Karina Ariev, Daniella Gilboa, Liri Albag and Naama Levy, will return to their families after a long period of captivity. This release follows that of three women last week, but Israel criticised Hamas for an alleged breach of the agreement. In fact, the agreement initially provided for the release of the civilian women, before the female soldiers.

Karina Ariev and Daniella Gilboa: the stories of propaganda and hope

Karina Ariev, 19, originally from Jerusalem, had appeared in a Hamas propaganda video last July. In the clip, she implored the Israeli government led by Benjamin Netanyahu to end the war and bring her home. Next to her was Daniella Gilboa, also 19 years old, who had told of being abducted while sleeping. In the video, Daniella had made a heartfelt appeal to the Israeli authorities: ‘Do your job, bring us home alive.’ Both had appeared together with Doron Steinbrecher, a civilian released last week.

Liri Albag: a dramatic appeal in tears

Liri Albag, another of the soldiers to be released, has been detained for over 450 days. Three weeks ago, when negotiations resumed in Doha, she appeared in a video released by Hamas. In the clip, in tears, she asked: ‘What would you do if one of your family members were here?’ Her family said Liri was unrecognisable, visibly tried by her captivity.

Naama Levy: between volunteering and captivity

Naama Levy, 21, was captured in footage released by Hamas on 7 October, injured and dragged in a jeep after being captured near the Gaza border. Raised in India, she had dedicated part of her life to volunteering with the United Nations and the Red Cross. Before her abduction, Naama had been involved in the Hands of Peace organisation, which promotes dialogue between young Israelis and Palestinians. According to her father, she was kept separate from the other hostages in a tunnel in Gaza during her captivity.

Naama Levy: between volunteering and imprisonment (but will not be released tomorrow)

Among the kidnapped young female soldiers is Agam Berger, who, however, is not part of the group like her fellow hostages to be released tomorrow. A 20-year-old violinist and talented musician, she was drafted into the army on 5 October 2023, only two days before the Hamas assault. Agam was stationed at a base near the Gaza border. While in captivity, her violin became a symbol of hope: one of her performances was broadcast Wednesday night on a popular Israeli reality show, ‘Hakochav Haba’, which selects the country’s representative for Eurovision. For her, there will still be a wait.
