Al-Sharaa announces plan for Kurdish forces to join Damascus army and transfer control of key cities

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has announced a ceasefire agreement with the Kurdish leadership, outlining a plan for the integration of Kurdish forces into the national army. According to local media, the accord requires Kurdish authorities to immediately hand over control of Deir Ezzor and Raqqa to the Syrian state, while the government assumes responsibility for ISIS prisoners and their families.

Meeting today with U.S. envoy Tom Barrack, Al-Sharaa emphasized Damascus’s sovereignty over all of Syria, noting that Syrian forces continue to advance against retreating Kurdish fighters in the north and east. “President Al-Sharaa reaffirmed Syria’s unity and sovereignty across its entire territory, highlighted the importance of dialogue in the current phase, and stressed the need to rebuild Syria with the participation of all Syrians,” according to a statement from the presidency. The meeting also included Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.

The day before, in Erbil, U.S. envoy Barrack met with Mazloum Abdi, commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, as reported by the Kurdistan Regional Government. The meetings indicate ongoing diplomatic coordination between the U.S., Syrian government, and Kurdish leadership to ensure a peaceful transition and integration process.

The Kurdish forces integration in Syria represents a significant step toward stabilizing conflict zones and consolidating state control, potentially easing tensions between Damascus and autonomous Kurdish regions.
