The possible meeting between the United States and Russia opens a new diplomatic phase, while Brussels awaits a more incisive role in the negotiations on the war in Ukraine

Russia and the United States have announced the start of concrete preparations for a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, scheduled to take place in the coming days. This was confirmed by Russian presidential adviser Yuri Ushakov, who stressed the importance of this step in laying the foundations for an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

Putin and Trump take center stage, Europe watches
The main protagonists of the dialogue will be Putin and Trump, while the direct involvement of Volodymyr Zelensky appears more uncertain. Europe, which geographically includes Ukraine, finds itself in a delicate position: Brussels wants to have a say in defending Kiev’s interests and ensuring a stable and lasting peace, hopefully a just one, in a context that cannot ignore Ukrainian consent.

Zelensky strengthens the European axis
The Ukrainian president, aware of these dynamics, is strengthening relations with key European leaders. In recent days, he has spoken with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron, stressing the importance of a shared European vision on continental security and the end of the conflict. Zelensky has also expressed his willingness to maintain a courageous approach on the Russian side as well, not ruling out direct meetings.

Brussels’ position
The European Commission, while stressing that “the format of the meetings has not yet been defined,” has stated that it is not disappointed by its possible exclusion from the negotiating table. President Ursula von der Leyen has been regularly updated by various European leaders, but the question remains whether more active involvement by the Union would not have been strategically preferable.

The importance of a European role in the negotiations
At this crucial moment when the roadmap for the negotiations is being defined, Europe must make its influence felt. The security and autonomy of the continent, as well as the stability of Ukraine, depend on the outcome of these negotiations. Brussels, therefore, is called upon to strengthen its position in order to best protect its own interests and those of its member countries.
