The Starmer government steps up the pace: if Israel does not agree to a ceasefire, formal recognition will come as early as autumn

The United Kingdom is considering officially recognising the Palestinian state, according to The New York Times, citing two senior British officials.

The change in policy by the government led by Keir Starmer is linked to growing internal political pressure, exacerbated by the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Several MPs and members of the Labour government have called for formal recognition of the Palestinian state, partly in the wake of France’s decision, which has recently reignited the debate at European level.

The issue could represent an important test for the British executive, which is called upon to balance its alliance with Israel, domestic public opinion and rapidly changing international relations.

Keir Starmer’s British government is therefore prepared to bring forward its commitment to formally recognise the State of Palestine to September if Israel does not agree to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
