The NGO “Un Mondo senza Bavaglio” (A World Without Gags) denounces widespread impunity and collapsing living conditions: water rationing, blackouts and hospitals without medicines

The situation in Venezuela continues to worsen in terms of human rights and living conditions. This is denounced by the NGO “Un Mondo senza Bavaglio”, which has launched an urgent appeal so that “the world does not forget what is happening” in the South American country, which is still in the midst of a humanitarian emergency.

In its latest report, based on official sources and independent data, the organisation reports that in 2024, 522 murders were committed by state security forces, with a devastating impact especially on young people from working-class backgrounds.

In addition, 2,635 arbitrary detentions were documented in the second half of 2023 alone, following post-election protests.

The report also highlights the collapse of essential services:

  • 45.6% of households suffer daily water supply interruptions
  • 69% of electricity
  • less than 30% receive gas regularly
  • only 20% can rely on public transport

The health crisis is also serious: in 91% of public hospitals, patients must bring medicines and medical supplies from home in order to receive treatment or undergo surgery.

According to the NGO, “repression is on the rise, human rights are being shamelessly trampled on and impunity is now the norm”.
