The 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner receives additional prison time and restrictions

The new sentence for Narges Mohammadi after new charges in Iran marks another legal setback for the Iranian activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, who has faced repeated prosecutions linked to her human rights work.

Mohammadi has been sentenced to six years in prison on charges of “assembly” and “collusion,” according to Iran International, citing statements released by her lawyer, Mostafa Nili. The ruling also includes an additional one year and six months in prison for propaganda activities. Under the ruling tied to the new sentence for Narges Mohammadi after new charges in Iran, she will also be banned from leaving the country for two years and required to stay away from the city of Khosf for the same period.

Mohammadi, 53, was arrested on December 12 in Mashhad along with other activists after speaking at a memorial ceremony for a lawyer who had been found dead. In comments to AFP, her lawyer said the ruling can be appealed and expressed hope that, given her health conditions, she could be released on bail to receive necessary medical treatment. The case surrounding the new sentence for Narges Mohammadi after new charges in Iran is expected to remain under close scrutiny.

Over the past 25 years, Mohammadi has repeatedly faced trials and imprisonment because of her activism against the death penalty in Iran and against mandatory dress rules for women. The history leading up to the new sentence for Narges Mohammadi after new charges in Iran reflects a long pattern of legal action connected to her activism.
