The Russian president was on a mission to the region on the border with Ukraine. This is reported by a senior military commander

During Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the Kursk region on 20 May, the presidential helicopter allegedly became the focus of a Ukrainian drone attack. This was revealed by the commander of the Russian Air Defence Division Yuri Dashkin during the TV programme Vesti Nedeli, aired on the Rossiya 1 channel.

According to Dashkin, the Russian air defence successfully repelled the offensive, ensuring the president’s safety. The incident had not been disclosed until today and was not accompanied by any official statement from the Kremlin on whether there was a direct threat.

Putin was in the border region of Kursk, which Moscow declared completely “liberated” from Ukrainian forces at the end of April, thanks in part to the support of North Korean fighters. During what the Kremlin called “a working mission”, the president had met with acting governor Alexander Khinshtein and visited the site of the future Kursk-2 nuclear power plant in the city of Kurchatov.

During his speech, Putin had also announced the extension of the special economic zone to the entire region, emphasising that the measures will be structured in such a way as to avoid opportunistic transfers of businesses from other areas of the Federation.

The news of the attack, if confirmed, is a further sign of the increasing pressure of the Ukrainian forces on the border areas and the high level of risk that now accompanies even the Kremlin leader’s internal movements.
