Tel Aviv is reportedly considering targeted operations against Iranian nuclear facilities. Washington still relies on the diplomatic route.

Israel has not ruled out an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities in the coming months, even without US support. The indiscretion comes from Israeli officials, while US President Donald Trump has reportedly told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Washington prefers to maintain a diplomatic line for the time being.

Israel reiterates its will to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon. Netanyahu insists that any ongoing negotiations with Tehran have as their ultimate goal the complete dismantling of Iran’s atomic programme.

A second round of talks between US and Iranian delegations is scheduled in Rome today. But in parallel, according to confidential sources, Tel Aviv has already presented Washington with a series of military options, with operational windows between late spring and summer.

The plans would involve a combination of air strikes and raids by special units, calibrated to delay the Iranian nuclear programme from a few months to more than a year.

The New York Times reported that during a recent meeting at the White House, Trump made it clear to Netanyahu that he wanted to pursue the diplomatic route with Iran, at least in the short term, while denying that he had completely rejected the Israeli plans.

In light of this position, the Israeli authorities would now be considering a limited action, which would not require the full support of the United States. This would be a more restrained operation than the scenarios initially envisaged, but with the declared aim of significantly slowing down Tehran’s atomic programme.
