The mayor of the Ukrainian city denounces a raid against civilians. Kiev accuses Moscow of choosing a symbolic date to maximise impact
A Russian missile attack hit the city of Sumy in north-eastern Ukraine this morning, causing numerous casualties. Mayor Artem Kobzar broke the news through a message posted on Telegram and relayed by local media. ‘Today there are many dead due to a missile attack (…) The enemy hit the civilian population again,’ Kobzar wrote, without giving precise figures.
Confirmation from Kiev: civilian casualties, but still uncertain tally
The head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak, also confirmed the attack and the numerous casualties. However, no official numbers have yet been released. Rescue operations are ongoing and the authorities are working to assess the damage and identify those affected.
Accusations from Kiev: ‘An attack designed to strike on a symbolic day’
According to Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Centre for Combating Disinformation of the Ukrainian National Defence and Security Council, the choice of Palm Sunday is not accidental. Russian forces, he said, would deliberately launch the attack on a symbolic day in order to target as many civilians as possible and fuel terror among the population.
