The US president announces a pause on duties on some Chinese hi-tech products, including smartphones, at a crucial time in the trade war with Beijing

Donald Trump has decided to suspend 125% tariffs on Chinese smartphones, including iPhone models, and other electronic devices imported into the United States. This exemption comes at a strategic moment in the trade war with China and is intended to prevent a price increase for American consumers. The exemption, which came into effect through an order of the Customs and Border Patrol, applies to products imported on or after 5 April and those that had already left the warehouses on that date.

Benefits for Apple and other technology companies

Trump’s decision has had a positive impact on technology giants such as Apple, Samsung, HP and Dell, which manufacture a significant portion of their devices in China. Apple, in particular, benefits significantly from this suspension, as around 90 per cent of its iPhones are still produced in China, despite the company’s attempts to move part of its production to India. Thanks to this move, Apple avoids a price increase that would have been inevitable without the exemption.

The background of the tariff war and the effects on consumers

The decision to suspend tariffs on electronic devices represents an attempt to balance Trump’s trade policy with the interests of American consumers. If the tariffs had been implemented, the prices of iPhones and other products would have increased significantly, which would have had a direct impact on consumers’ wallets. This measure also stimulated an increase in sales of electronic devices, with consumers rushing to make purchases before the situation changes.

Investment and shifting production

The Trump government has not abandoned its goal of bringing technology production back to the US. The White House has stated that the goal is to reduce dependence on China for the production of critical technologies such as semiconductors, chips and smartphones. Major technology companies, including Apple, are already moving some of their production back to the US, with the intention of reducing exposure to China and strengthening national economic security.
