G7 foreign ministers found compromise on Ukraine and Gaza, avoiding divisions between US and Europe

The G7 foreign ministers’ meeting in Canada ended successfully, despite initial concerns that a final agreement might not be reached due to tensions between the US and Europe. The event was held under the Canadian presidency, which played a decisive role in avoiding a diplomatic failure. In the end, thanks to Canada’s commitment and the United States’ willingness to dialogue, a compromise was found that allowed a joint document to be presented.

Unwavering support for Ukraine

The main focus of the meeting was Ukraine, with ministers expressing ‘unwavering support for Ukraine in the defence of its territorial integrity and its right to exist’. In the final draft, Russia was asked to accept and implement ‘a ceasefire on equal terms’, different from the original text that called for a ceasefire ‘without conditions’. In case of Moscow’s non-acceptance, the G7 threatened further sanctions. The positive outcome of the US-Ukraine talks, held in Jeddah, helped to unblock the situation, favouring a softer American position and allowing the meeting to be successfully concluded.

Gaza crisis: compromise on final document

Another important compromise was reached on the crisis in the Gaza Strip. The final version of the document lacks the explicit reference to ‘two peoples, two states’, present in the original draft, replaced by a more generic reference to a ‘political horizon for the Palestinians’. Despite this, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reassured that Italy’s position on this issue remains unchanged. Tajani expressed ‘great satisfaction’ with the outcome of the meeting, emphasising the importance of the G7’s unity and the message of peace launched on both Ukraine and the Middle East.

Dialogue between Italy and the United States on tariffs

In a bilateral meeting between Minister Tajani and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, at his first G7 meeting, the topic of dialogue between the United States and Italy on trade tariffs was addressed. Tajani reiterated the importance of confrontation and cooperation between the two powers, emphasising that ‘a tug-of-war is of no use to anyone’. The conversation was described as ‘very positive’, confirming the solidity of the partnership between the two countries. Furthermore, Tajani brought to Rubio’s attention the case of the Italian cooperator Alberto Trentini, detained in Venezuela, asking for US support to obtain the release of Italian political prisoners.

G7 unity and message of peace

The hostess, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, emphasised the importance of the unity shown by the G7 at a time of geopolitical tensions. Although the final press conference was cancelled due to Joly’s commitments with the swearing-in ceremony of the new Canadian government, the concept of ‘strong unity’ dominated the balance of the event.
