Keir Starmer promotes summit to discuss possible ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Pressure mounts on Vladimir Putin

On 15 March 2025, the summit of the ‘Coalition of the Willing’, wanted by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, will take place. The meeting, which will take place via video conference, aims to discuss a possible 30-day truce between Russia and Ukraine, which the US and Ukraine agreed to during recent talks in Jeddah.

The event is an update on the summit held on 2 March at Lancaster House, London, which saw the participation of Volodymyr Zelensky. However, despite the importance of the summit, the participation of the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, is still uncertain.

The 30-day truce, proposed by US President Donald Trump and supported by Kyiv, remains pending a final response from Russian President Vladimir Putin. Starmer reiterated the importance of monitoring any possible ceasefire to ensure its seriousness and duration. ‘We cannot allow Putin to use this agreement to his advantage. If Russia does not participate with serious intentions, it will be necessary to intensify economic pressure,’ the British PM said.

The meeting will involve some 37 countries, including Commonwealth and European members, discussing how to support Ukraine, both financially and militarily, should a negotiated agreement with Russia be reached. The coalition of the ‘willing’ has outlined plans to provide assistance with troops, aircraft, and ships in support of Ukraine, but the US may limit its contribution to aerial surveillance and intelligence assets.

Sources close to the meeting, quoted by the Kyiv Independent, pointed out that the pressure on Moscow is mounting for a final decision. However, concerns remain that Russia may use the ceasefire to regroup and resume offensives.
