Trump denies his words about Zelensky: how reliable are promises about Putin? Trump’s inconsistency regarding his statements on Zelensky raises doubts about his ability to communicate real facts about promises made in peace negotiations with Putin

During a White House press conference, Donald Trump denied ever calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky a ‘dictator’, despite a post on Truth suggesting exactly the opposite. ‘Did I say that? I don’t think I said that,’ Trump replied, trying to quickly dismiss the issue. This episode, however, highlights a broader theme: Trump’s ability to maintain consistency and reliability in his statements, especially on sensitive international issues.

The promises on Putin: peace agreement or illusion?

Trump has expressed confidence that Russian President Vladimir Putin will ‘keep his word’ and honour an eventual peace agreement in Ukraine. However, given the ease with which Trump has changed or downplayed previous public statements, there is a risk that this confidence is misplaced. Putin has a long history of making unpredictable and aggressive moves, and an approach based only on personal relations may not be enough to secure long-term peace.

Ukraine and NATO: an uncertain future

In his statements, Trump reiterated that Ukraine will not join NATO, saying that ‘it will not happen’. This position may be part of an attempt to reassure Putin, but it remains to be seen how durable it will be and how strategic it really is. Ukraine’s fate within the Atlantic Alliance is a sensitive issue, and Trump’s statements, as well as his diplomatic strategies, could be subject to change based on international pressure.

Trade and geopolitical agreement with Zelensky

Trump also confirmed the imminent signing of a strategic agreement with Zelensky, calling it a ‘safety net’ for Ukraine, referring to a rare earths agreement that would foster economic cooperation. Here we reflect another critical point: how stable and reliable these promises of support for Ukraine are. If Trump has been inconsistent in some of his statements, the question remains whether the trade agreement can really represent a lasting commitment to Ukrainian security.

Trump’s conflicting statements raise doubts about his ability to deliver on his promises in delicate international negotiations. If his words on Zelensky are easily contradicted, how will he be able to secure a solid agreement with Putin? In such an unstable context, consistency and clarity in diplomatic communications become crucial to build trust and ensure peace.
