Nepalese general shot during an assault on a peacekeeper convoy on the road to the airport, which has been blocked for days. Unifil demands justice

The Nepalese General Chok Bahadur Dhakal, deputy commander of Unifil, was injured in an attack against a convoy of peacekeepers on the road leading to the airport in Beirut, Lebanon. The area, which had been blocked by Hezbollah militiamen for two days, was the scene of violent clashes. Unifil confirmed the incident in an official note, expressing deep concern over the incident. A few hours earlier, the Lebanese army had already condemned the burning of one of Unifil’s vehicles.

‘We are shocked by this outrageous attack on the blue helmets, who are committed to ensuring security and stability in southern Lebanon at such a sensitive time,’ Unifil said in the note. The organisation also stressed that the attacks against the peacekeepers constitute serious violations of international law, potentially classifiable as war crimes. It calls for a prompt and full investigation by the Lebanese authorities so that all those responsible for the attack are prosecuted and brought to justice.

The incident has escalated tensions in the area, which has already been tested by recent protests by Hezbollah supporters, who continue to block the road to the airport in the southern suburbs of Beirut, one of the strongholds of the pro-Iranian movement. Unifil, which has been active in Lebanon for decades, is in charge of monitoring the situation along the border with Israel and maintaining peace between the different factions, but this new attack risks further aggravating the already fragile situation in the region.
