After the United States, Argentina also announces exit from the World Health Organization, accused of pandemic mismanagement

Argentina will follow the example of the United States and exit the World Health Organization (WHO). This was announced by a spokesman for President Javier Milei, confirming that the government has instructed Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein to begin the process of disengagement from the international entity. The decision comes two weeks after a similar announcement by the United States under Donald Trump.

According to the Argentine government, the motivation behind this choice is the inadequate management of the pandemic by the WHO. Manuel Adorni, a spokesman for Milei, pointed out that Argentines do not tolerate interference by an international organization in their sovereignty, and particularly in their health. The argument recalls the same accusations made by Trump in 2020, who initiated the process of the United States leaving the WHO by accusing the organization of being under China’s control.

Argentina’s farewell is part of an international context where other leaders, such as Matteo Salvini in Italy, are urging a departure from international institutions, accusing them of excessive power and alliances with multinational pharmaceutical companies. However, in Italy, the Lega’s bill to leave the WHO has not found broad support within the majority, with Forza Italia and some members of Fratelli d’Italia opposed.
