Judge Deborah Boardman issues injunction blocking ius soli abolition indefinitely
An important decision has been made by Maryland federal judge Deborah Boardman blocking indefinitely the ius soli abolition promoted by former President Donald Trump. The measure, which would have changed the rules of citizenship in the United States, was suspended thanks to an injunction issued during a hearing on a lawsuit filed by civil rights groups. The latter claim that the abolition of ius soli is unconstitutional, calling into question the proposal’s legitimacy.
Boardman’s decision comes amid continuing legal and political debates over citizenship in the United States, with the ius soli system historically granting citizenship to those born on U.S. soil, regardless of their parents’ immigration status. Judge Federal’s block could therefore have major repercussions for the citizenship reform plans pursued by Trump.
