The idea of deporting Palestinians to make Gaza a tourist resort is a dangerous provocation that risks setting the Middle East on fire

Donald Trump has crossed a new limit, as if the executive orders already issued that have wreaked havoc in the US and around the world were not enough, with his latest stunt on Gaza: to turn the Strip into a ‘Riviera of the Middle East’, a Palm Beach of the Mediterranean, under US control, by deporting Palestinians to other countries. A delusional idea that not only tramples on every principle of international law, but amounts to an open declaration of war in one of the most unstable regions on the planet.

To think of uprooting an entire people from their land to make way for luxury resorts is an insult to history, justice and human dignity. China, Egypt, Turkey, the Palestinian leadership, and last but not least even the King of Jordan, have already strongly rejected this madness, denouncing the risk of an escalation that could lead to a conflict without end. Even within Western diplomacy, concern is growing over the catastrophic consequences of a plan that seems to have been written by those who have no understanding of the reality on the ground.

Hatred in the Middle East is already fuelled by decades of violence and religious differences. Trump, with his proposal, is merely throwing petrol on an already devastating fire. If his words were to turn into concrete actions, the result would be only one: a new war, with unpredictable developments, that could engulf the entire international chessboard.

The world cannot allow such a crazy and illegal idea to take hold. The solution is not deportation, but the recognition of a Palestinian state with full rights. The rest is just irresponsible propaganda, which risks writing another bloody chapter in the history of the Middle East.
