US authorities have recovered the bodies of the victims, and 66 have already been identified

US authorities have confirmed that they have recovered the bodies of all 67 victims of last week’s plane crash, when an American Airlines airliner and a military helicopter collided in mid-air near Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport on the banks of the Potomac River.

In an official statement, the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services said: ‘After extensive search and recovery operations, the Unified Command confirms the recovery of 67 plane crash victims. At the moment, 66 of the remains have been positively identified. This is an important step in bringing closure to the families and the community’.

The agency went on to praise the ‘tireless work’ of the police, airport personnel, maritime rescue teams and the Coast Guard involved in the recovery, acknowledging the dedication and expertise that were crucial in such a complex and delicate mission.

Despite the recovery of the bodies, the operations are not yet over. Teams will continue to work in the Potomac River and other areas to search for any remains, while the coroner’s office is committed to ensuring dignified identification of the remains and supporting the families in this painful process.
