The South African tycoon criticises the plan’s funding

First signs of friction between Elon Musk and Donald Trump regarding ‘Stargate’, the visionary project for the development of artificial intelligence, which envisages a total investment of USD 500 billion. Musk, from his profile on X, questioned the financial viability of the initiative, stating: ‘They don’t have the money to make it happen. SoftBank has only guaranteed $10 billion, and this is a certainty that comes to me from a reliable source’.

The project involves big names such as Oracle, SoftBank and OpenAI, with the goal of allocating USD 100 billion in the initial phase, and then reaching the total amount over the next four years. Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank, reiterated the consortium’s commitment, but Musk openly criticised the plan, despite his personal financial support to Trump’s election campaign, to which he contributed $277 million.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded to Musk’s remarks in a measured and respectful tone: ‘I sincerely admire what you have accomplished and believe you are the most inspiring entrepreneur of our time,’ he wrote on X. However, the tension between the two is palpable: Musk has repeatedly expressed reservations about Altman’s management, accusing him of having betrayed OpenAI’s original mission, which envisaged an ethical and thoughtful development of artificial intelligence.

Meanwhile, Musk is pursuing his personal ambitions in the field with the start-up xAI, founded in 2023. The company is developing a supercomputer in a former industrial plant in Tennessee, aiming to consolidate its position in the field of generative artificial intelligence. The debate takes place against a backdrop in which the Biden administration, shortly before Trump took office, also recently accelerated investment in the sector, signing an executive order to build new specialised data centres in the United States.
