The 82nd Golden Globes awards season honoured the best in film and TV series with the success of Emilia Perez, The Brutalist and Shogun

The 82nd Golden Globes opened the awards season with the triumph of Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez. The film, with 10 nominations, won three prestigious statuettes: Best Comedy or Musical Film, Best Foreign Language Film, and Best Supporting Actress to Zoe Saldaña, who won on her first nomination. Receiving the award, Saldaña addressed Isabella Rossellini, her rival in the same category for Conclave: ‘When I had lunch at your house, I realised I had achieved everything’. The film also won the award for Best Original Song, El Mal, performed by Saldaña herself.

On the night held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles and hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, Demi Moore marked her big comeback, winning Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for The Substance, a feminist horror film. Moore, emotional, recalled how a producer had called her a ‘popcorn’ actress, unable to win awards, and recounted the journey that led her to a rebirth thanks to director Coralie Fargeat and colleague Margaret Qualley.

Another big star of the evening was The Brutalist, which won three awards, including Best Drama Film, Best Director to Brady Corbet and Best Drama Actor to Adrien Brody. Sebastian Stan also shone, winning Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for A Different Man, where he plays an aspiring actor suffering from neurofibromatosis. From the stage, Stan made a plea for the normalisation of disability in film stories.

Other film winners included Fernanda Torres, Best Drama Actress for Walter Salles’ I’m Still Here, and Peter Straughan, awarded Best Screenplay for Conclave. Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, while Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers won for Best Score, composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Best Animated Film went to Flow, while Wicked, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, won for Best Film at the cinema and box office.

On the TV series front, Shogun dominated the night with four awards: Best Drama Series, Best Lead Actor for Hiroyuki Sanada, Best Lead Actress for Anna Sawai and Best Supporting Actor for Tadanobu Asano. Best Comedy Series was Hacks, while Best Miniseries or TV Movie went to Richard Gadd’s Baby Reindeer, with Jessica Gunning winning Best Supporting Actress. TV winners also included Jodie Foster for True Detective: Night Country and Colin Farrell for The Penguin.

The evening also saw hilarious moments, such as the one involving Elton John, who announced the winner of Best Original Song by wryly stating, ‘There’s been a lot of talk about my loss of sight… I’m happy to be here with Rihanna,’ while standing next to him was actually Brandi Carlile.
