Far-right leader Herbert Kickl in charge of forming the new government in Austria
President Van der Bellen entrusts the Fpo with the task of leading the country after the failure of negotiations between conservatives, social democrats and centrists
Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen has officially mandated Herbert Kickl, leader of the Freedom Party of Austria (Fpo), to form a new government. The decision came after negotiations between conservatives, social democrats and centrists stalled last weekend, making the creation of a coalition impossible.
In his address to the nation, the president emphasised that the Fpo was the most voted party in the legislative elections in September, but he also recalled the existence of the ‘cordon sanitaire’ placed by the other parties against the Fpo. Van der Bellen promised that he will ensure that the rule of law is respected during the formation of the new executive, urging not to underestimate the importance of the political moment.
In Italy, Lega League leader Matteo Salvini expressed his support for the Austrian Fpo allies. ‘All our support to the Austrian friends of Fpo, historical allies of the League, entrusted with Herbert Kickl to form a new government after winning the elections months ago,’ Salvini wrote on social media, welcoming the task entrusted to Kickl.
