A man suspected of a heinous crime was arrested by NYPD after setting a woman on fire on the F train in Brooklyn

The NYPD has arrested a man suspected of committing one of the most heinous crimes in the city recently: burning a woman alive on the Brooklyn subway. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, in a press conference, described the incident as “immoral” and shocking. The suspect, according to reconstructions, calmly approached the victim while she was on the F train, pulled out a lighter and set her clothes on fire. The woman caught fire within seconds.

Despite the timely intervention of the police, who managed to extinguish the flames with a fire extinguisher, the victim died instantly. Surveillance camera footage provided investigators with a clear image of the suspect, who had not left the scene, remaining seated on a bench on the platform.

Thanks to the dissemination of the suspect’s image, three high school students provided a tip to police, which led to the man’s arrest at a subway station in Manhattan. The identities of the suspect and the victim have not been released, but Joseph Gulotta, a police officer, said there was no interaction between the two prior to the incident. “We don’t believe they knew each other,” he added, noting that the suspect is an immigrant who came to the United States from Guatemala in 2018.
