Former Syrian president denies resignation and denies rumours of his escape

Former Syrian President Bashar al Assad issued a statement saying that his evacuation from Syria on 8 December was unplanned, but requested by Russia after a drone attack on the Hmeimim base, where he had reportedly gone to coordinate Russian military operations. Assad said he remained in Damascus until the early hours of the morning, continuing to carry out his government duties.

Assad emphatically rejected any suggestion of resignation or request for sanctuary, denying that such possibilities had ever been raised. He reiterated that his only priority was fighting terrorists, referring to the Hayat Tahir al Sham militiamen, who took control of parts of Syria, including Damascus, on 7 December.

The former president criticised the spread of fake news and distorted narratives that, according to him, tried to present international terrorists as liberators of Syria. He justified the delay in official communication with security reasons.

Despite his forced exile, Assad emphasised his deep connection to Syria and its people, expressing hope that the country will soon return free and independent.
