McLaren and Ferrari separated by 21 points in the final act of the Formula 1 season

Formula 1 is preparing for the grand finale of the season with the last Grand Prix in Abu Dhabi, scheduled for Sunday 8 December. The Constructors’ Championship is still open, with Ferrari and McLaren ready to battle it out until the last corner: the British team holds a lead of just 21 points, but the margin has narrowed after the Qatar GP. Here Max Verstappen triumphed, while Charles Leclerc gained a precious second place, preceding the McLaren of Oscar Piastri. Further back was Carlos Sainz, sixth, and Lando Norris, tenth.

A historic rivalry

The challenge between Ferrari and McLaren brings to mind seven previous ones in which the Constructors’ title was decided at the last race, with Ferrari having the advantage in the direct confrontation (4-3).

1974: McLaren triumphs in the Constructors‘ and Drivers’ titles with Emerson Fittipaldi;
1982: Ferrari turned the tables and celebrated the title;
1985: Alain Prost leads McLaren to another one-two finish;
1998-2000: A period of intense duels culminates with the successes of Mika Hakkinen for McLaren (1998) and Michael Schumacher for Ferrari (1999 and 2000), handing the Constructors’ title to the Red after 16 years of waiting;
2008: The last direct clash sees the triumph of Ferrari, which has not won a Constructors’ title since.
