ISIS threatens Belgium after lauding the Bondi Beach attack in Australia, highlighting ongoing jihadist operations and raising security concerns across Europe

ISIS Threatens Belgium: Background and Context – The Islamic State has issued a direct threat to Belgium following its praise of the deadly attack at Bondi Beach, Australia. In its weekly bulletin Al-Naba, ISIS lauded operations carried out against “unbelievers,” stating that “none of them is immune from skepticism and media distortion, whether the terrorist organisation officially claims them, merely praises them, or maintains deliberate silence, leaving the enemy confused and indecisive.” The warning underlines that jihad remains alive, emphasising that ISIS continues to plan and inspire attacks worldwide.

Details of the Bondi Beach Attack and ISIS Response

The bulletin referred specifically to the Bondi Beach attack, describing it as “a source of pride” occurring “at a time when the crusaders celebrate their pagan holidays.” ISIS declared that the jihad “will never cease, however apparent the weakness of the Islamic State may seem.” In its official message on Telegram, the group praised the attack without claiming direct operational involvement; the assault resulted in 15 fatalities.

Investigations Reveal Perpetrators’ Movements

Investigators discovered that the attackers, Sajid and Naveed Akram – father and son – spent several weeks in November at a budget hotel in Davao City, Philippines. The hotel manager confirmed to MindaNews that the Akram men rarely left their room, spending a maximum of one hour outside per day. Australian media reports suggest the pair had travelled to the Philippines for military-style training with ISIS-affiliated groups, though Philippine authorities have dismissed these claims as misleading.

ISIS Threatens Belgium: security Implications in Europe

The threat issued by ISIS against Belgium highlights the continuing global reach of the organisation. European security services are urged to remain vigilant as jihadist propaganda encourages further attacks. Experts warn that even indirect threats, such as ISIS praising attacks abroad, can increase risks to civilian safety and complicate counter-terrorism efforts. The warning reinforces the need for coordinated intelligence sharing and heightened security across European nations.
