Kilmar Abrego Garcia repatriated to the US: charged with human trafficking
Salvadoran citizen, illegally deported to El Salvador, now faces trial in the United States on the orders of the US Attorney General
Kilmar Abrego Garcia has been repatriated to the United States after being illegally deported to El Salvador, despite a ban on expulsion issued by the US courts in 2019. His imprisonment in the CECOT maximum security prison in El Salvador had drawn strong criticism from the US authorities.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed that the man had been formally charged with human trafficking, based on an arrest warrant issued in collaboration with the Salvadoran government. The grand jury indictment, dated 21 May, relates to a criminal operation lasting more than a decade that allegedly involved the illegal transport of migrants, some of whom were affiliated with the MS-13 gang.
